Agricultural Territory

While Québec’s territory is vast, less than 2% of its surface area is conducive to farming. For comparison purposes, the total surface area occupied by good farming soil in Québec is two times less than in Ontario and four times less than in Alberta.

Having ascertained that this already very limited agricultural heritage was continually losing ground in the face of expanding urbanization, Québec intervened in the late 1970s to ensure its protection by creating agricultural zones.

Today, agricultural zones cover a territory representing a total surface area of over 63,000 km², more than half of which is occupied by farming operations.
